The Intern Life - The Wait is Over – Day 84

WOW all of the work we had put into planning the events for today finally paid off!

My day started at the CBC studio at 12 noon where the interns and some volunteers all slowly gathered in the dressing rooms. Our stylist and backstage manager Crystal Carson had the volunteer dressers tape and prep the shoes as well as steam the retailers garments. It was a slow start backstage as much of the set up was already complete, but our team was well prepared and fed by the time of the show. During the show I was stationed by the shoes and had to grab shoes for different models in their different scenes, because many of the shoes were being used more than once and keeping track of them was a challenge. As the show started, so did the chaos backstage, there were some minor issues with shoes not fitting so we did some last minute changes, which was a rush of excitement.

The turn out at CBC was larger than anticipated, and the line up was wrapped around the building early afternoon. For those that were there early enough to get inside, the show began at 6:30 and was a beautiful display of our local designer talent. Once cleaned up at the studio the interns were free to shop and head over to the after party. The whole day went well for the studio team and it was a fun experience, can’t wait to see Fashion’s Night Out grow in the upcoming years!

The Intern Life – Week 8 – One Week Left!

Busy doesn’t even begin to describe how the last few weeks have been.  I’ve never felt so popular with my inbox constantly full and I’m afraid my poor phone is going to give out with the amount of notifications it sends me on a daily basis.  But the big day is less than a week away, which means it is serious crunch time!  As the publicist for Fashion’s Night Out Vancouver, all media requests and FNOV questions go to me so you can only imagine!!

All this hard work won’t be worth it though if you don’t enjoy the night so make sure you come down and support your local fashion industry!  Start the night off at the official FNOV Fashion Show at the CBC’s Studio 40 and catch the latest collections from local designers and shops.  Marilyn’s of West Vancouver and Pilar Buse Boutique have just been added to the roster.  Consider this your official invitation but it is first come, first entry so be sure to get there early!!  I’ll be the one running in heels but at least I will look good!

Make sure to scan the QR Code to download the official FNOV Mobile App to your smartphone and stay in the loop on the go!  See you September 6th!

The Intern Life - Excitement Building – Day 66

With a few weeks left until the big day our intern efforts are being used in marketing; watch out for our girls Downtown wearing Vancouver Fashion Showcase t-shirts handing out promo cards and free swag this weekend and the days leading up to September 6, 2012. We are also looking for volunteers to help with our event backstage dressing as well as our street teams promoting the show. (Email Charmaine@fashionshowcase.ca for more information!)

The Intern Life – Week 7 – Design Competition

It was amazing, and if you missed it, then you missed out.  August 15th saw the first design competition for the FNOV event and it was a complete success.  Riding off the success of the styling competition and learning from our mistakes, the FNOV team pulled off an awesome event that couldn’t have gone any better.  My job was press and helping backstage to organize the models and dressers.  When it came to show time, the 8 designers looks took to the runway without a problem and the chatter from the stellar audience spoke of the quality of work they were viewing.  But 8 had to be whittled down to two and I did not envy Jason Matlo, Rozemerie Cuevas and Luisa Rino for having to do that job.

Evan Ducharme and Abby Shumka had made it to the finals but the challenge was far from over.  A secret box full of fabric and trimmings had to be made into something beautiful in five minutes flat and they were up to the challenge.  With nothing but pressure the two contestants managed to make beautiful garments out of a seemingly simple piece of red jersey.  After a second catwalk, the winner was announced.  Evan Ducharme well deservedly took home the top prize.

If you missed his collection, you will have another chance to view it as he will be showing it at the FNOV kick off fashion show along side judges Jason and Rozemerie and many other retailers.  What an amazing experience!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for September 6th and I will have more details to follow in the next few days….

The Intern Life – Design Contest – Day 60

Today is event day! It started at the unnatural hour of 4:30am for myself as I worked at The Bay in Coquitlam before heading downtown. When I finished at 11, I headed over to the bus loop to make my way to Ayden Gallery, my bus arrived just before one and I walked over to the event space. Upon arrival all of the pipe and drape had already been set up and the chairs brought up as well. My job was to bring up the water and slowly start setting up the backstage area where myself and some other volunteers were dressers for the models. After some confusion and then some changes to the process backstage, we were each assigned one model to work with to help him/her change quickly and organize their outfits and shoes. The time then flew by and we were all of the sudden 20 minutes away from the first outfits and the show went well without any major issues. We were finished and done setting up earlier than expected which is always a bonus!

Congratulations to recent graduate Evan Ducharme who won the contest and will show his collection at Fashion’s Night Out. Be sure not to miss our main event happening September 6, 2012.

The Intern Life – Day 59 - One More Sleep

At the Tuesday meeting at Carmana Plaza Florence was very excited to tell us some great news. Our Fashion’s Night Out mobile application for smart phones will launch next week, and she was happy to show us the initial templates. We then discussed some minor details for the design event including who would pick up the shoes (sponsored by Town Shoes) as well as learning that bondage tape is the best to use for taping shoes. We went over what times we should arrive at to help begin the set up and also went over the rundown of how long each part of the night would take. Many of the interns are scheduled to arrive at 12:00pm to start taping shoes, and carry up water and chairs from the cars. Can’t wait until tomorrow!

The Intern Life – Day 52 – Design Competition

August 15th was our Fashion Design competition, held at the Ayden Gallery in Tinseltown. The day started at 11:00 am for us, with our first stop at Town Shoes in Pacific Centre to pick up all of the shoes for the runway show. Then we headed over to the gallery to help with setup and organizing. The event started at 5:30 pm with a runway show of all the contestants’ collections. The judges cut the contestants down to two, where they then competed in a draping competition where they had to drape an outfit together in 5 minutes. I was so impressed by how beautiful their dresses looked after such a short amount of time!

The judges final decision, and winner of the night, was VCAD grad (and one of my classmates), Evan Ducharme! So happy for him, I love his collection and he definitely deserved the win. His collection will now be featured in the big fashion show on September 6th alongside our featured retailers.

Now that the event is over, we are totally focused and pumped for all that’s happening on September 6th. For more information check out www.fnovancouver.com

The Intern Life – Day 52 - More Planning

Our meeting on Tuesday at Carmana Plaza had good attendance and with our design event coming up next week, we have just a few minor details to figure out, and then it is up to us on day of to do set up. We hope to see more people attending this next event kicking off at Ayden Gallery at 5:00pm Wednesday, August 15th, 2012.

As for the big September 6th event, our roles were assigned and I will be manning the pop up shop location at Carmana Plaza where our retailers outside of our main areas have come in and set up their stores. Also for the main fashion show I will be helping out Kristine and pulling some of the estimated 100 looks for the show and assisting her with the line up, and I’m looking forward to working on this very important aspect.

The Intern Life – Week 6 – The Big Day Is Coming!

Our last meeting was pretty hectic as the day of the big event is coming so everyone’s workload seemed to just double.  I have been put in charge of making invitations for the August 22nd retailers info night, the September 6th VIP event and the September 6th fashion show.  I am also in charge of mailing out said invites, putting together the guest list and seating charts, styling the final fashion show (very excited) and maintaining my usual publicist duties by replying to emails on the regular.  Very busy but it is so exciting!  I can’t wait for the night to unfold because I know it is going to be great!  The next event this upcoming Wednesday is also going to be a hit as I know a few of the designers who made the final and their work is amazing.  I am so happy for them and happy I get to be there to see it all unfold.  Mark your calendars for August 15th at 5:30 pm and I will see you at the Ayden Gallery!
